MCI screening must for all doctors from abroad: SC

Medical Council of IndiaIn a landmark decision that will impact medical research in the country, the Supreme Court have ruled that those doctors who return from the foreign countries after pursuing medical education need to clear the screening test conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Pronouncing the judgemnet, the three member bench of CJI KG Balakrishnan said that such test should be legal according to Section 12&13 of MCI.

"The scope of Section 13(4A) is quite clear and covers all foreign medical institutions falling within the ambit of Sections 12 and 13 of the Act,” said the Bench.

Notably, the number of institutes offering medical studies is less in the country.

On the one hand, private institutes charge very high fees and on the other it is not easy to get a medical seat in a government Medical College in India.

As a result, large number of students in the country visits foreign countries like Nepal and China to pursue medical studies.

Apart from this, the apex court has also directed both the union and state governments to ban those institutes which provide sub standard education in India.
