Brown, Bush to meet on economic crisis

Brown, Bush to meet on economic crisisWashington/London  - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will meet with US President George W Bush on Friday for emergency talks on the financial crisis in the United States that has caused turmoil in global markets.

The two leaders will also discuss the dispute with Iran over its nuclear activities, and the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Georgia, the White House confirmed Thursday.

Brown is already in the United States, attending the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting will take place one week after Bush proposed a 700-billion-dollar bailout plan to address the financial crisis on Wall Street.

The meeting was also announced by British officials in London.

Bush has sought to assure the world the US economy is stable and that his controversial move to buy out risky mortgage securities that are threatening the credit market is designed to stave off broader economic fallout.

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warned this week that the rescue plan is necessary to avoid a recession, although many economists have said they believe the US economy has already fallen into one. (dpa)
