Whoopi Goldberg hits out at allegations over Polanski ''rape'' comments
Washington, Oct 1 : Whoopi Goldberg has slammed accusations that she condoned rape on her U. S. TV talk show, insisting that she was just trying to put the facts right about the charges levelled against director Roman Polanski.
Polanski, who was arrested in Switzerland on Saturday, is currently fighting extradition to the U. S. over his 1977 conviction for unlawful sex with a minor.
And the ‘Ghost’ actress came under fire after discussing the case on The View on Tuesday.
"It was something, but I don''t believe it was rape-rape,” Contactmusic quoted Goldberg as saying on her show.
Her statement did not go down too well with critics, who labelled her an "apologist for rape”.
However, the actress has finally hit out at the reaction to her comments, claiming that she was only trying to get the "facts straight".
"Some people got the idea that I was condoning what he did. I''m going to be very clear: I was trying to make sure we had our facts straight because that''s my job - particularly about what he was arrested for and what he was charged with, which was unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, not rape, which was my point,” she said.
