Canara Robeco AMC: yields carry the quarter as the SIP book softens

BOBCAPS trims its target to Rs 283 but keeps faith with a capital-light manager earning a 62.6% operating margin, with the stock trading barely above its 52-week low.

Yields did the heavy lifting

The headline story of the quarter is pricing, not volume. Revenue from asset management services rose 17% year on year and 4.6% quarter on quarter to Rs 121.6 crore, while quarterly average assets under management (QAAUM) grew a far more modest 3.9% to Rs 1,24,400 crore. The gap is explained by yields, which BOBCAPS calculates at 39.1 basis points of QAAUM against 34.7 bps a year earlier.

Operating discipline held. EBITDA climbed 18.5% to Rs 76.1 crore, and the margin settled at 62.6%, against 62.7% in the June quarter and 61.8% a year ago.

Management puts yields at 40 bps for equity, 28 bps for debt and 2 bps for liquid funds, or 37 to 38 bps overall on its own calculation base. It is comfortable in a 35 to 40 bps band and would rather chase volumes than squeeze pricing.

Why profit dipped from June

Reported profit after tax rose 21.6% year on year to Rs 59.2 crore yet fell 21.7% from the June quarter's Rs 75.6 crore. The culprit is other income, which collapsed to Rs 6.6 crore from Rs 29.6 crore as mark-to-market gains on the company's own book shrank amid choppy markets. With about 90% of that treasury in equities, the line will keep swinging. Core profit before tax, which strips the noise out, still grew 18% to Rs 73.5 crore.

The leaderboard below tells the story: profit lines have climbed to the top while asset growth has slid to the bottom.

The SIP book loses some momentum

The softer patch sits in systematic investment plans. Monthly SIP and STP contributions fell 12% year on year to Rs 676 crore across 19.6 lakh active accounts. SIP assets stand at about Rs 41,000 crore, roughly a third of total AUM, with an average tenure above three years.

Management traces the slowdown chiefly to the change in ELSS tax-saver rules, which reduced renewals, compounded by maturities and closures as markets turned volatile. The fix is a renewed drive built on Goal SIP to lengthen holding periods, plus a dedicated SIP team working with key channel partners.

Mix, reach and fund performance

Equity-heavy book: Equity QAAUM rose 5% to Rs 1,13,200 crore, cooling from 12.8% in the March quarter. Debt assets shrank 5.9% to Rs 11,200 crore.

Beyond the metros: Monthly average AUM from beyond the top 30 cities was Rs 28,900 crore, a steady 23.6% of the total.

Distribution muscle: The network now spans more than 57,186 empanelled partners and 29 branches, while investor folios eased 1.6% to about 50 lakh.

Performance watch: Some schemes sit in weaker quartiles; fund-manager KPIs are now tied to one- and three-year returns. The mid-cap and multi-cap funds launched about three years ago have each crossed Rs 5,000 crore.

A fork in the road for new business

The company is lining up a couple of new fund offers this year, subject to approvals, including an equity fund before March 2027. It will also choose one of three adjacent businesses within six to 12 months.

Estimates trimmed at the edges

BOBCAPS has shaved its forecasts only marginally, cutting FY28E and FY29E profit by 1.7% and 2.9%. It now expects average AUM and revenue to compound at 11% and 9% a year over FY27E-FY29E.

How BOBCAPS gets to Rs 283

Ingredients

• Forward EPS, Sept. 2028E: ~Rs 12.3 (implied)

• Target multiple: 23x

• Earlier target: Rs 315

Method

1. Roll the valuation forward to September 2028 earnings.

2. Apply 23 times, a premium to the roughly 18 times FY28E earnings the stock trades at today.

3. Result: Rs 283, about 28% above the Oct. 12 price, despite a 10% cut from the earlier Rs 315.

Editor's note

Mislabelled column: The report's two result-snapshot tables head the sequential comparison column "Q1FY26", but its figures (other income Rs 29.6 crore, PAT Rs 75.6 crore, QAAUM Rs 1,18,700 crore) match the June 2026 quarter, Q1FY27, as the report's text states. TopNews has used Q1FY27.

SIP assets: Page one puts SIP AUM at Rs 41,100 crore; the call takeaways say Rs 41,000 crore. TopNews uses about Rs 41,000 crore.

Target arithmetic: Averaging the report's FY28E and FY29E EPS (Rs 12.0 and Rs 13.0) at 23 times gives about Rs 288; the Rs 283 target implies roughly Rs 12.3, which the report does not print.

What could go wrong

Downside risks flagged by BOBCAPS

Market correction: A sell-off would hit both fee income and treasury gains.

Regulation: Regulatory shifts could disturb pricing.

Competition: Rivalry is intensifying while some schemes lag their peers.

The investor takeaway

Canara Robeco is still growing earnings faster than its asset base. The open questions are whether SIPs reignite and whether the new business adds a second growth leg. At about 18 times FY28E earnings, near the bottom of its 52-week range, BOBCAPS sees the risk-reward tilted in investors' favour, with a 12-month target of Rs 283.
