US film critics raving about ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog MillionaireBritish director Danny Boyle's latest offering, 'Slumdog Millionaire' is a film the critics in the US are raving about. An adaptation from Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's bestselling novel - 'Q & A' - the film is being predicted to go all the way to the Oscars!

Critical acclaim for the film, starring Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Dev Patel, has come from all over - from syndicated film critic Roger Ebert, whose reviews get published in 200 US newspapers, to mainstream dailies like the New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today.

Putting the entire experience of viewing 'Slumdog' in a nutshell, Ebert said: "This is a breathless, exciting story, heartbreaking and exhilarating at the same time, about a Mumbai orphan who rises from rags to riches on the strength of his lively intelligence. The film's universal appeal will present the real India to millions of moviegoers for the first time. When I saw 'Slumdog Millionaire', I was witnessing a phenomenon: dramatic proof that a movie is about how it tells itself."

The renowned critic further calls the film "one of those miraculous entertainments that achieves its immediate goals and keeps climbing toward a higher summit."

The film - which was the winner of the 2008 Toronto Film Festival People's Choice Award - grossed $418,000 since it opened November 12 in 10 theatres in six cities - New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Chicago and Toronto.

Following an overwhelming response, a company release said that the film would this week expand to 32 theatres. This includes its release in 10 more cities - Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and Vancouver.
