12 workers killed in dam collapse in IndiaNew Delhi - At least 12 workers were washed away when a dam that was under construction collapsed in India's north-eastern state of Sikkim, a news report said Friday.

The Rang Po dam collapsed Thursday night in eastern Sikkim and efforts were being made to retrieve the bodies from a tunnel downstream, police officials told the PTI news agency.

The small dam was being built by a private company for storing water for hydropower generation at a project nearby.

Ramesh Kumar will replace Sajjan Kumar and Agrawal will replace Jagdish Tytler in two Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress withdrew Tytler and Kumar from contesting the polls in the wake of a shoe-throwing episode related to their exoneration in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots on April 9.

The first phase of polling witnessed the killing of people in violent incidents at 86 polling stations, mostly in the Naxalite affected areas of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

President issues notification for fifth phase of electionsNew Delhi, Apr 17 : President Pratibha Patil on Friday issued the notification for the fifth and last phase of Lok Sabha elections.

In this phase, polling will be held in two seats in Jammu and Kashmir, nine seats in Punjab, four seats in Himachal Pradesh, eleven in West Bengal, five in Uttarakhand, 39 in Tamilnadu, 14 in UP and one each in Puducherry and Chandigarh.

The last date for filing nomination is April 24 and scrutiny will take place on April 25.

The election will be held on May 13.

In the first phase, 58 to 62 per cent of 143 million voters exercised their right to vote.
