New Delhi, Apr. 25: The Election Commission of India on Saturday issued a notice to senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh for violating the Model Code of Conduct.

The commission's notice said that Singh would need to explain his adverse comments against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

New Delhi, Apr 25: The Congress on Saturday attacked senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh for his latest claim that BJP''s primeministerial candidate L. K. Advani had opposed the decision to free terrorists during the Kandahar hijack crisis.

Talking to reporters here, party spokesperson Rajiv Shukla termed Jawant Singh''s attempt to defend Advani as a "complete farce" and said that he was "unnecessarily blaming" former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

New Delhi, Apr 25 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has said that India's response to the Sri Lankan crisis has been impacted by China which is using this issue to expand its sphere of influence in the island nation.

Chidambaram's comments are important as Lanka's importance for Beijing is in the sea-lanes of communication in the north Indian Ocean through which Chinese trade and energy supplies flow.

New Delhi - Five members of a family were trampled to death on Friday by wild elephants that went on a rampage in a village in India's north-eastern state of Assam, a news report said.

Wildlife officials told the IANS news agency that two elephants strayed into a village in the western Dhubri district late on Thursday night.

"The elephants first tore apart a mud-and-thatch hut and killed a woman and her two children," Syed Isfaqur Rehman, a local offical told IANS.

New Delhi, Apr 24: Under the aegis of the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), a non-governmental organisation working to eradicate child labour, parents of missing children held a protest march here on Friday against the apathy of the politicians.

Chanting slogans, the parents whose children have been missing for several years gathered at the Jantar Mantar.

They say New Delhi has become a safe haven for traffickers and abusers of children.
