Smog, winds cause minor delays at IGI Airport

Many national and international flights were delayed due to poor visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Changing wind direction and smog caused some inconvenience to passengers up to Saturday afternoon.

Director in-charge of IGI meteorological office, Dr R K Jenamani said pollution and heavy dust build up raised lower visibility problem. The situation may remain as it is for another 24 hours causing inconvenience to low flying aircraft and helicopters.

According to the data of meteorological department, general visibility started increasing around 10.30 pm from Friday night. It was recorded at 800 m while runway visual range (RVR) was 1,800 m which further fallen to 500 m by 1.30 am. The official of the Delhi International airport (P) Ltd deployed some safeguard measures to improve visibility conditions.

The Airport Authority is taking various measures to mitigate smog and fog problem. It had already deployed an Instrument Landing System at the airport for successful landing of aircrafts despite poor visibility.
