Scooters – Back in vogue!
While at one point of time, scooters were almost a no-no from every two-wheeler maker in the Indian market, the trend shows that more and more two-wheelers companies are being lured by the high growth that the segment offers.
Companies like HMSI, Hero Honda, TVS et al are already very strong in the scooters segment with Honda Motorcycles and Scooters standing at the pole position.
In fact, the segment saw a growth of 22 per cent standing at 1.46 million units in 2009-10, overtaking the previous highest record sales in a fiscal of around 1.29 million scooters sold way back in 1998-99.
Notably, Scooter sales stood at 1.2 million units in the FY 2008-09. President (marketing), TVS Motor Company, HS Goindi explained the fact that the scooters are becoming second vehicle among Indian households who want to travel within a shorter distance after their cars.
Hero Honda Senior VP - marketing Anil Dua believes that there is still a lot of scope in the scooters segment. Notably, Hero Honda sells an average of around 20,000 units per month of its product focused on females - Pleasure.
