Roma Kaur, the global mouthpiece for Sikh women

Amritsar, Dec 21: Particularly Sikh women, Roma KaurDeeply concerned with the problems often faced by women around the world, particularly Sikh women, Roma Kaur, has chosen to become the voice of women through her literary works.

A graduate of Punjab University and post graduate in French from Rajasthan University, Roma started writing poetry during her childhood. She also taught French and English.

After settling down in Canada, she has worked with a mainstream multicultural TV station and produced regular TV shows.

She worked very closely with the Punjabi community in different countries to understand their feelings and problems.

Roma feels women around the globe need a mouthpiece to express themselves and in this regard she started the “Kaurs” in November 2004. This first magazine of its kind on the Punjabi Diaspora, has provided to be quite beneficial.

“Since I have been working with the media, I was quite convinced that women around the world, especially Punjabi women, needed a platform to strengthen themselves and get the solution of their day to day problems”, Roma said.

“Kaurs” aim is to acquaint its readers, especially the young generation, with role models of the community.

“Through our publication, we encourage women to rediscover themselves, ” Roma said.

After getting overwhelming response in Canada and USA, Roma is planning to publish “Kaurs” for women living in Punjab.

The magazine has already been published in English and Punjabi languages.

Expressing her deep concern over the Punjabi’s craze of settling abroad, Roma said: “I would like to tell the young generation that they shouldn’t presume that the other side is greener. They must realise that opportunities are everywhere. The economic boom in India is convincing many to return to India. ”

“Hard works always pays either here or anywhere, then why not work in our own country, ” she added.

Roma has also been actively involved with the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle since 1994. (ANI)
