Polish Foreign Minister wants "normal" relations with Russia

Warsaw  - Poland wants "normal" relations with its eastern neighbour Russia, despite Moscow's anger over a planned US missile defence system to be located in the country, the Polish foreign minister said on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Polish radio that "as a gesture" he had recommended that the Russians be invited to inspect the bases to be used in the proposed missile defence system.

The US and Poland signed an agreement in Warsaw on Wednesday for the construction of ten missile interceptor sites in the north of the country, as part of a system designed to defend Europe and the US against intercontinental missile attacks.

Polish President Kaczynski criticizes Berlin, Paris over Russia Warsaw  - The Polish President Lech Kaczynski on Saturday criticized Germany and France for what he considered their pliability vis a vis Russia in the current crisis in the Caucasus.

Both Western European countries have had a "very typical" relationship with Russia, Kaczynski said in an interview published in the Rzeczpospolita daily.

This position by the two countries is due to "the historical experiences and interests of corporations" that are looking to make "big money" in Russia.

Poles say Russian diplomat's visit still on Warsaw  - Poland still expects a scheduled visit from a Russian diplomat after sealing a deal on a controversial US missile defence shield to be hosted in Eastern Europe, the foreign ministry said Friday.

Poland's PAP news agency reported earlier that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had cancelled a planned trip to Poland in September after Thursday's US-Polish agreement.

Poland's Foreign Ministry has no official word that Lavrov has called off the trip, local media quoted a ministry spokesman as saying.

Poland, Baltics call for Georgian NATO membership Warsaw  - Poland's President Lech Kaczynski and his Baltic counterparts called for a NATO action plan for Georgia on Wednesday, saying membership is the only way to prevent future "aggression and occupation" after the recent Russia-Georgia conflict.

The leaders were also critical of a recent French peace proposal for Moscow and Tbilisi, saying it was missing a point on respecting Georgia's "territorial integrity."

Poles show support for Georgia

Poles show support for GeorgiaWarsaw  - Some 300 people gathered outside the Russian embassy in the Polish capital Warsaw on Monday to show support for Georgia in its fourth day of conflict with Russia.

Organized by "Solidarity with Georgia," the demonstration came as the conflict intensifies over the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.

Demonstrators carried signs like "Hands off Georgia" and "Out with Russian imperialism."

The show of support came as 95 Poles evacuated from Georgia landed in Poland on Monday.
