Poles show support for Georgia

Poles show support for GeorgiaWarsaw  - Some 300 people gathered outside the Russian embassy in the Polish capital Warsaw on Monday to show support for Georgia in its fourth day of conflict with Russia.

Organized by "Solidarity with Georgia," the demonstration came as the conflict intensifies over the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.

Demonstrators carried signs like "Hands off Georgia" and "Out with Russian imperialism."

The show of support came as 95 Poles evacuated from Georgia landed in Poland on Monday.

On Saturday, Poland called for an emergency EU summit to discuss the conflict and Poland's President Lech Kaczynski also condemned Russia's actions in a joint statement with Eastern European leaders.

Russian-Polish tensions are high over a proposed US anti-missile shield to be placed in Poland. Russia suspects the shield could be used against it, despite US claims it is meant for protection against states like Iran. (dpa)
