Polish leader fires missile-shield negotiator with US  Warsaw  - Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday removed Poland's top negotiator in missile-shield talks with the United States, highlighting political infighting over the stalled project.

Hours before Tusk signed Witold Waszczykowski's dimissal note, a magazine quoted the negotiator as saying Tusk was driven by domestic politics when he rejected the latest US offer last month.

Poland, Baltic states condemn Russian actions in South Ossetia Warsaw  - The presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia condemned Saturday in a joint statement the actions of Russian forces fighting in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia.

The declaration was "sharp, but the situation calls for it," Polish President Lech Kaczynski told journalists in Warsaw.

He described the Russian intervention as incompatible with international law and an "act of aggression."

Report: Russian diplomat to visit Poland despite tensions

Warsaw  - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet with his Polish counterpart in September despite recent tensions and threats from Moscow over a proposed US anti-missile shield to be hosted in Poland, it was reported Thursday.

Citing anonymous sources Wyborcza, Poland's largest daily, said that Lavrov is to discuss the Russian-controlled Strait of Baltiysk with Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski.

The waterway is the Vistula Bay's only connection with the Baltic Sea, and the only route from the sea to the Polish port of Elblag.

Russia has on several occasions blocked access for Polish vessels and closed access completely in 2006.

Sinti, Roma demand greater protection for minorities from EU Warsaw  - Representatives of the Sinti and Roma communities called for more effective measures from the European Union to protect minorities at a ceremony in the former Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz on Saturday.

The chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, Romani Rose, said he was observing with "great concern" current developments following violent physical and arson attacks on the minority in Naples and other Italian communities.

Poland honours fighters who rose against the Nazis Warsaw  - Thousands of Poles took part in day-long events Friday to mark the 64th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi occupation during World War II.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Lech Kaczynski laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the capital.

Other events were slated to honour Stefan Rowecki, leader of the Polish Home Army, and Antoni Chrusciel, a commander of the armed forces during the failed attempt to liberate Warsaw in 1944.
