ElBaradei seeks stronger IAEA mandate in North Korea, say diplomats

Vienna  - UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohammed ElBaradei wants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to play more than an advisory role in verifying North Korea's nuclear programme, diplomats close to the agency said Friday.

In late June, Pyonyang handed over a declaration of its nuclear programme and materials to be verified by the six parties involved in the denuclearization of North Korea.

On July 12, the United States, Russia, China, South Korea and Japan agreed with North Korea to verification measures such as visits to facilities and interviews with North Korean specialists, with details still needing to be worked out.

Right-wing governor Haider under fire for expelling asylum seekers

Joerg-HaiderVienna  - Joerg Haider, the right-wing governor of Austria's Carinthia province, has run foul of the justice ministry in Vienna for expelling asylum seekers to other provinces.

Haider has forced asylum seekers to leave Carinthia, claiming they were criminals, and said he would not accept any more without advance knowledge of their background, the interior ministry confirmed.

Austrian Justice Minister Maria Fekter said Thursday that the expulsions might constitute coercion or unlawful restriction and could be investigated by the judiciary.

Iran, IAEA start talks on cooperation, outcome of Geneva parley

Iran NuclearVienna - The heads of the Iranian Atomic Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) started their meeting in Vienna on Thursday, to discuss Iran's cooperation with the IAEA and it's recent talks with world powers in Geneva.

Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh, Iran's nuclear chief, was expected to discuss with IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei to discuss bilateral cooperation and how to proceed following the Geneva talks last Saturday.

The IAEA is still seeking answers from Tehran about past research projects that could be related to a nuclear weapons effort.
