Taiwan stocks surge 6.74 per cent for biggest gain in 18 yearsTaipei - Taiwan stocks skyrocketed Thursday, closing 6.74 per cent higher in their biggest percentage rise in 18 years on the bullish outlook over upcoming Chinese investment on the island, dealers said.

The main Taiex stock index advanced 378.51 points to 5,992.57 with foreign institutional investors buying 32.99 billion Taiwan dollars (996 million US dollars) of shares on the hopes of further gains, dealers said.

Taiwan's TSMC's first-quarter profits down 94 per centTaipei - The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, saw its first-quarter profits fall 94.5 cent due to the global slump, TSMC said Thursday.

Net profits were 1.56 billion Taiwan dollars (47 million dollars), down 94.5 per cent year-on-year.

TSMC's revenues for the first three months of 2009 totalled 39.5 billion Taiwan dollars, down 54.8 per cent year-on-year.

Taiwan allowed to rejoin WHO assembly as observer

WHOTaipei - The World Health Organization (WHO) is allowing Taiwan to attend its annual assembly as an observer, marking progress in Taipei's fight to end its international isolation, a Taiwan official said Wednesday. Health Minister Yeh Chin-chuan told parliament that the WHO has invited Taiwan to attend the World Health Assembly (WHA), which is to open May 18 in Geneva, as an observer.

The invitation was issued by WHO Secretary General Margaret Chan Tuesday, apparently because of improved ties between Taiwan and China.

Cambodian prime minister calls for ASEAN meeting on swine flu

Swine FluPhnom Penh - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday called on South-East Asian leaders to hold an emergency meeting to agree on a regional strategy to stem the spread of swine flu. "We need to have an emergency meeting of ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) to address this deadly disease as soon as possible," he told a graduation ceremony at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh.

The premier called on ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan to organize the meeting and invite health ministers from all member countries.
