Good looks save Taiwan rooster from the potTaipei- Exiled Chinese dissidents plan to launch a series of activities intended to pressure China to apologize for the June 4, 1989, crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators on Beijing's Tiananmen Square, a Taiwan-based Chinese dissident said Thursday.

Wuer Kaixi, one of the student leaders of the 1989 protests who now lives in Taiwan, said the activities would kick off next week and climax on June 3 or June 4 with a news conference in the US capital.

Dutch insurer Aegon pulls out of TaiwanTaipei  - Dutch insurer Aegon NV is to sell its Taiwanese life insurance unit to local investors to boost its cash flow, local media reported Thursday.

Aegon said in a statement that it had agreed to transfer its local business to Taipei-based consortium Zhongwei Co for 84.5 million dollars, the Taipei Times reported.

The deal is expected to be completed by the end of third quarter, pending regulatory approval, the company said.

About 630,000 people were classified as out of work, 6,000 more than in February, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said in a statement.

Court orders life insurer to pay for man scared to death by burglar Taipei - The Taiwan High Court has ordered an insurance company to pay out an accidental-death policy on a man whose family claimed he was scared to death by a burglar, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Apple Daily said that the Taiwan High Court ruled Tuesday in the first case of its kind that the Cathay Life Insurance Co Ltd must pay 1 million Taiwan dollars (290,000 US dollars) to the family of Pan Hsu-ming, who died of apparently fright three years ago.
