Maxwell stars again in Kings XI big winSharjah, April 23 - Another stunning batting performance by Glenn Maxwell helped Kings XI Punjab thrash Sunrisers Hyderabad by 72 runs for a hat-trick of wins in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Tuesday.

Maxwell, who had struck 95 and 89 in the last two games, again came up with a whirlwind knock of 95 in just 43 balls hitting five fours and nine sixes as Kings XI made 193 for six in 20 overs.

Veteran pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji starred with the ball picking up four for 13 from his four overs as Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 121 runs with four balls to spare.

Air Arabia adds Cairo as a destination

Air-ArabiaSharjah, March 1 : United Arab Emirates (UAE) low-cost carrier Air Arabia has strengthened connectivity with Egypt with the launch of non-stop services to the country's capital, Cairo.

The inaugural flight, G90620, took off for Cairo Feb 27 at a special ceremony attended by senior officials from Air Arabia and the Egyptian Ambassador to the UAE, Ihab Emam Hamouda.

The new service from the carrier's primary hub in Sharjah marks Air Arabia's fourth destination in Egypt and 90th worldwide.

Ajmal vows to bounce back following poor performance in first two Lanka Tests

Saeed AjmalSharjah, Jan 15  : Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has been able to take just five wickets in the two Tests against Sri Lanka, has vowed to to bounce back in the third Test of the series.

Ajmal, who has taken 164 wickets in 32 Tests at an average of five wickets per match, said he had never had such a bad response from the pitches.

He further said he is doing the hard work and will bounce back, and added that the ball isn't spinning and Lankans are playing very cautiously.

India beat Pakistan to lift U-19 Asia Cup

Vijay-ZolSharjah, Jan 4 : Identical centuries from skipper Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson helped India lift the U-19 Asia Cup cricket title with a 40-run win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium here Saturday.

Put in, Samson and Zol struck 100s as India posted a competitive 314 for eight in 50 overs. Pakistan finished on 274 for nine after Saud Shakeel made an unbeaten 102.

India got off to a good start, with Ankush Bains hitting a 34-ball 47. But India were soon reduced to 85/2.

Srinath had won the Asian Junior at Tashkent in June 2012 and made his maiden Grand Master norm. He is also a former World Under-12 champion having won it at Belfort, France in 2005. Winning this title again in back-to-back years gives Srinath another Grand Master norm.

Jet Airways Set to Launch Sharjah-Kochi ServiceJet Airways has decided to roll out daily services from Sharjah to Kochi from September 1, 2009.

The sources said that the airline will introduce services from Sharjah aboard a state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The sources further added this will be Jet Airways' fourth daily service to the Gulf from Kochi, complementing the airline's existing daily services from Kochi to Doha, Kuwait and Muscat sectors.

Kerala boy crushed by Indian truck driver in Sharjah

Sharjah, Sept. 17: A nine-year-old Kerala boy was crushed to death by an inattentive Indian truck driver at a construction site near a building where he used to go for his tutorials.

A Gulf News report quoted Sharjah Police officials as saying that a lorry carrying cement mixture crushed Rickie Mathew Varghese, a pupil of Delhi Private School.

The Indian driver of the lorry was not paying attention while reversing it and ran over the boy by accident, police said.

The driver, they said, was unable to hear any cries because of the engine's noise. He also did not expect any children to be around in the area because it is a construction site.

Police in United Arab Emirates seize 202 kilos of heroinSharjah  - A drugs gang responsible for smuggling 202 kilos of heroin into the United Arab Emirates has been uncovered in what the police described as the biggest drugs seizure in the region.

Abdullah al-Dukhan, deputy chief of Sharjah police, said the pure heroin seized is estimated at 40 million dirham (10.9 million US dollars).

"The 19-member-gang is from Afghanistan and was based in Sharjah," al-Dukhan said at a press conference on Tuesday, adding that the drugs were found in suitcases in an apartment ready to be sold.

UAE smokers to face fines

UAEAbu Dhabi - Sharjah, one of the emirates in the United Arab Emirates, is to impose fines for smoking as a part of an anti-smoking campaign, an official said Saturday.

Salem al-Oies, head of Sharjah's local and agriculture affairs, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the new smoking fines will be implemented inside closed public and governmental buildings in addition to different modes of transport.

The fines will range from 10,000 to 20,000 dirhams (2,700 to 5,400 dollars). Al-Oies said they will be imposed on smokers of normal cigarettes, cigars and Hookahs.
