Viswanathan Anand sees Bright future for Indian chess

Viswanathan AnandKolkata, Jan. 15 : Grand Master Viswanathan Anand has said that the future of the game of chess is bright in India with several promising young players performing well at the junior level.

He spoke highly of the young chess players in India.

"Lot of promising young people are there. We have Surya from Kolkotta. Then there is Shashi who is already in top 20 and he is India''s great vehicle. In girls we have Hampi, Tania Sachdev and Parimarjan Negi," Anand said while talking to reporters here.

Tapan Sinha Passes AwayThe common man's protagonist and master story teller, Tapan Sinha, gave in to his prolonged illness on Thursday, at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) in south Kolkata.

Dadasaheb Phalke award winner, Sinha (84) was suffering from pneumonia and septicaemia and is survived by a son. His actress-wife Arundhuti Devi passed away in 1990.

Thick fog disrupts normal life in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jan 15: Thick fog disrupted normal life and delayed air and rail traffic in Kolkata.

General visibility at the city airport dropped to low impermissible levels resulting in rescheduling of many flights.

Altogether 47 domestic flights could not take off while 13 flights could not land as the visibility dropped to almost zero around midnight due to fog at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport.

Many trains were also running late from their schedule timings due to the fog.

Residents, who were out for a morning walk, said that visibility was extremely poor and they could not see a person even within the walking distance.

Binani Cement inks MoU with Gujarat Govt. to setup a Greenfield Cement Plant

Braj Binani Group cement manufacturerKolkata-based Braj Binani Group cement manufacturer, Binani Cement Ltd. has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Gujarat Government to set up a Greenfield cement plant of 2.5 MTPA capacity in the state.

The plant will manufacture Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Pozzolona Portland Cement (PPC) in various grades. It may be noted that the production of OPC to PPC will be ordinarily 50:50.

West Bengal Government promoting river tourism in a big way

Kolkata, Jan. 13: `Ganga Kutir' lies along the banks of the Ganga in the pastoral hamlet of Raichak-on-Ganges, about an hour and half's drive from Kolkata, West Bengal. This 12-crore property sprawling over two acres symbolizes the potential of River Tourism in the state.

It''s no wonder then, that the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation is foreseeing an investment of Rs 150 crore in the next couple of years just for promoting river tourism. The investment would go towards renovating `heritage ghats' along the Ganges as well as developing a Marina with speed boats, para-sailing and cruise boats facilities.
