Kerala’ longest snake boat enters Guinness book of world records

Kerala’ longest snake boat enters Guinness book of world recordsKochi, Oct. 7 : A steel-made snake boat has entered the Guinness Book of World Records here for recently carrying 141 persons and being the longest ever made boat of its kind. The previous record was of 118 people on board.

A first of its kind in Kerala, the steel boat is 143.25 feet long and 5.74 feet wide. It weighs eight tonnes and has been christened as ''Aries Chundan''.

On May 1, the boat carried a crew of 141 rowers, including five helmsmen, in Punnamada Lake in Alapuzha district.

Admiral Mehta calls for eternal vigil to protect arsenals

Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh MehtaKochi, Sep 19 : Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta today said that the country''s “adversaries” are resorting to asymmetric form of warfare, targeting arsenals and called for eternal vigil to protect sensitive installations.

“Our adversaries are increasingly resorting to asymmetric forms of warfare and these include attacks on sensitive establishments in peace,” he said after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee celebration of Naval Armament Depot at nearby Aluva.

Navy Chief visits Southern Naval Command

Kochi, Sept 17 : Chief of Naval Staff and Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee Admiral Sureesh Mehta will arrive at Southern Naval Command in Kochi today.

The Admiral would be received at INS Zamorin, Ezhimala by Vice Admiral Sunil K Damle, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command.

On completion of a review of the important Naval Academy project there, Admiral Mehta would arrive in Kochi on Thursday afternoon, where he would be briefed on the various developmental and operational activities of Southern Naval Command.

The Navy Chief will address the officers of Southern Naval Command on September 19 after which he is slated to visit Cochin Ship Yard Limited.

Ten day harvest festival ''Onam'' concludes

Onam harbingers a season of festivities in KeralaKochi, Sept 12 : The ten day long harvest festival ''Onam'' concluded with gaiety in Kerala on Friday.

The festival that began on Tuesday saw the religious fervor of the people soaring high as the thousands of people celebrated the festival with gaiety.

The festival is celebrated after harvesting of the principle crop and filling the granaries to full, a sure sign of prosperity. It began with ''Atham'', the 17th day of the Malayalam month ''Chingam'' this year and the main day of the festival is called ''Thiruvonam'' on which people celebrate the day with a grand feast.
