'Vishwaroopam' screened in Kerala

VishwaroopamThiruvananthapuram, Jan 26 : Kamal Haasan's controversial film "Vishwaroopam" was Saturday screened here amid a police presence. It got support from the youth wings of the CPI-M and BJP here, though a section of Muslims protested the screening.

Activists belonging to the Popular Front of India - PFI (a confederation of Muslim organisations) arrived at the Kairali theatre, demanding the film not be screened and alleged the film depicts the community in a bad light.

A strong police presence foiled their attempt and the film was screened. The film is currently banned in Tamil Nadu.

All hurdles cleared for Kochi Smart City: Chandy

/Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, Jan 18 : All hurdles have been cleared for the much-hyped and much-delayed Rs. 5,000 crore ($1 billion) Kochi Smart City, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here Friday.

"The last hurdles in the project have been overcome. Our request to make the entire project under a single SEZ (special economic zone) has been approved by the central government. This had caused a delay. Work will soon commence," Chandy said.

India level series with emphatic win

One woman, two organisations among diaspora awardees

s/Vayalar-Ravi21Kochi, Jan 9 : Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi Wednesday announced the winners of the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Divas awards, to be given away here later in the day by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The lone woman in the list is Patricia Maria Rozario, who is settled in the UK. She has won the award for contributions in the field of music.

Australian Indian Society of Victoria and Indian Doctors Forum in Kuwait are the two organisations that have been named for the award, and both get the award for community service.

Vayalar Ravi asks cash-rich NRIs to invest in Kerala

"Gone are the olden days where Kerala's labour unrest was always news. I and the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy were strong trade union leaders but that's a thing of the past and today Kerala is one state where there are no industrial disputes at all and I call upon you to seriously apply your mind to invest in Kerala," said Ravi.

"I am planning to enter the business of resorts and one of the locations that I have zeroed in is to have a plush resort in the capital city of Kerala," Chatwal told IANS ahead of a session at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas being held here.

The owner of the Hampshire Hotels and resort has a plush hotel here that he set up in 2008, investing Rs. 200 crore.

Huge gap in infrastructure: Kamal Nath

The minister was addressing the 11th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here.

"The common psyche in India is that if something is not booming, then it is gloomy," he said.

The minister pointed out that while the automobile sector in the US grew by five percent, "in our country it grew by 18 percent. Is it not good?" he asked.

The production as well as exports of coffee dropped mainly due to low demand in the European markets, pest attacks and an erratic monsoon that took toll on the production of the product.

The outlook for coffee exports in the New Year also appears to be bleak, because international markets are still not giving encouraging signals.

/FacebookThiruvananthapuram, Jan 3 : Kerala Police has written to Facebook following a complaint from the parents of a young woman whose photograph was posted on the social networking site and identified as the Delhi gang-rape victim.

N. Vinayakumaran Nair, assistant commissioner of police, who heads the Hi-Tech Crime Enquiry Cell, said a probe had begun following a complaint from the parents of the woman whose picture was misused.

"We have written to the site which posted the picture. It should have been removed by now," Nair told IANS.

He said soon after the picture was posted, there were numerous comments saying it was fake.
