PM Manmohan Singh urges all parties to work together for normalcy in J-K

Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan SinghNew Delhi, Aug 18: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Monday urged all political parties and right-thinking people to work together to bring the situation in Jammu and Kashmir under control.

Speaking to reporters here after the oath taking ceremony of two new Rajya Sabha members, C. Rangarajan and S M Krishna this morning, Dr. Singh said: "Everybody has an obligation to contribute. This is not a partisan issue."

Protestors march to UN office in Kashmir capital Srinagar

Srinagar, India - Hundreds of thousands of protestors gathered at a sports ground in Jammu and Kashmir state capital Srinagar on Monday as separatist Hurriyat Conference leaders prepared to march to a United Nations' observers office with a memorandum demanding international intervention to resolve the Kashmir issue.

Hundreds of security personnel stood by under strict instructions to use maximum restraint and minimum force and not to use bullets to disperse protesters.

At least 23 people died in the Kashmir valley last week in police firings to disperse protestors whose agitation sparked by a land row has taken an anti-India turn.

Srinagar under tight security as Hurriyat leaders march to UN office

Srinagar, Aug 18: The civil lines area of Srinagar is under heavy security blanket in view of the proposed march by Hurriyat Conference’s Coordination Committee to the United Nations Military Observers Group office to present a memorandum over the alleged human rights violations in the Valley on Monday.

The security has been beefed up in all important installations around the area.

According to reports, the Hurriyat leaders will march to a spot near the UN office, then a small group will go inside as the Government has requested them to keep the crowds small, worrying that a large group could lead to fresh clashes with security forces.

Disruption in restive Jammu and Kashmir cleared: Home Ministry

Shivraj PatilNew Delhi, Aug. 16: The Union Home Ministry on Saturday said in a statement that all disruptions in the state of Jammu and Kashmir have been cleared and every effort is being made to ensure the free movement of transport and goods along the national highway.

It also said that notwithstanding improvements in the overall situation in the state, there were elements who were opposed to the normalization process, and they were indulging in activities contrary to the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Army monitors Jammu-Srinagar highwayKathua (J-K), Aug 16 : Fruits and vegetable laden trucks stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar highway have kept on moving towards the Kashmir under army protection.

Truck drivers said that traffic is moving smoothly on the main highways. Army personnel are deployed along the route ensuring safety and security.

"We are very happy that the army is there. Because of this, the supply of items is returning back to normalcy," said Sukhwinder, a truck driver.
