480 women killed, 195 raped in Karachi in 2008

karachiKarachi, Jan 7 : More than 1,885 incidents of violence against women took place in Karachi in which more than 480 women had been killed.

The report prepared by the Aurat Foundation said that over 279 women were murdered and more than 284 people - including 80 men - killed on the pretext of karo-kari, or honour killing, and attempts were made on the lives of 45 others.

The report says that 62 women were gang-raped, 86 raped; sexual assault was committed against 47 females and 157 suffered custodial violence and 414 others were abducted.

Bhutto was arrested on Saturday morning in Larkana and shifted to Karachi for interrogation. Earlier, he was placed under house arrest in Mirpur for allegedly ordering his workers to attack on the office of a Sindhi newspaper in Karachi.

According to The News, the court had earlier rejected a petition of the police regarding his physical remand and ordered that he be kept in the court''s custody till January

VVIP security arrangements in place for the Sri Lanka series: PCB

Karachi, Jan. 04 : As Sri Lanka continues to delay the announcement of the tour itinerary, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has once again assured that security will not be a problem during the home series against the Lankans .

"VVIP security arrangements will be made for the Sri Lankan team that is expected to play two Tests, three One-day Internationals and a twenty20 game during the tour of Pakistan," The News quoted a PCB official, as saying.

Karachi, Jan. 4 : The National Stadium of Karachi (NSK) could soon be getting a major face lift which would put the stadium on the list of some of the world's classiest cricket arenas, such as Lord's and the Melbourne Cricket Stadium (MCG).

The Director General of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Javed Miandad, with a dream to change the face of the National Stadium (NSK), has ordered renovation work at the NSK.

"My dream is to transform the National Stadium into a cricket facility that is second to none. National Stadium is one of our major Test centres and I want it to look as good as Lord's or the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)," The News quoted Miandad, as saying.

Pak minister says no differences between Zardari and Gilani

Sherry RehmanKarachi, Dec. 31 : Pakistan's Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman has rejected rumours of differences existing between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Rehman said such news is being falsely circulated by certain mischievous elements.

"There are absolutely no differences," The Daily Times quoted Sherry Rehman, as saying.

She added that the President and the Prime Minister were working seamlessly together.

Qadir failed to impress both Miandad and PCB chairman Ijaz Butt with his idea of playing trial matches which would help the selectors to pick the best possible team for the home assignment apart from providing the players a perfect opportunity to get ready for challenging assignments.
