Kabul  - The Afghan Interior Ministry said on Friday that 76 civilians, including women but mostly children, were killed in a coalition airstrike in western Afghanistan.

"Today in the afternoon during a bombardment of coalition forces 76 people, including 19 women, seven men and the rest children, all under 15 years-of-age were martyred," the interior ministry said in a statement.

Kabul - NATO forces coordinating with the Pakistan military fired artillery at militants who were preparing to attack a NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base in eastern Afghanistan, ISAF said on Friday.

Pakistani military confirmed to NATO forces that the militants were preparing to fire rockets at a military base in Paktika province, which is close to the porous border, ISAF said in a statement.

ISAF forces "gained positive identification of the insurgents" and fired "multiple artillery rounds" into Pakistan on Thursday night, it said.

Kabul - Three Canadian soldiers were killed and another was wounded in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

The soldiers, who were serving under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), were in a vehicle when it was struck Wednesday by the bomb in the Zherai district of Kandahar province, the Canadian military said.

Kabul, Aug. 19: Australian troops have killed a Taliban warlord who waged a campaign of intimidation and violence in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province.

Mullah Akhtar Mohammed and his armed protection party were spotted in a remote area of Oruzgan last week and were killed with an air strike.

The special operations task group (SOTG) patrol kept watch and, after confirming there were no non-combatants in the area, called in the attack jets, defence spokesman Brigadier Brian Dawson said.
