Roadside bomb attacks on upswing; "Taliban is not beaten"Kabul - The number of roadside bombing attacks in Afghanistan jumped by 50 per cent in the first eight months of the year, according to a top official in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

German General Hans-Lothar Domroese, chief of staff of the ISAF, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that 1,200 such bombs had been detonated by radical Islamic militia by August this year.

In the same period last year, 800 such attacks had been recorded.

The development was very worrying, Domroese said.

Up to 12 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan Kabul - Almost a dozen Taliban militants were killed in a fight with US-led coalition forces in south-eastern Paktika province, the US military claimed Friday.

In a bid to disrupt militant activities, the combined forces searched compounds in Bermel district of the province on Thursday, the statement said.

The militants inside the compounds engaged the forces during their search, the statement said, adding, "The forces responded with small-arms fire, killing the militants."

Coalition soldier killed in southern Afghanistan

Three Red Cross workers killed in central Afghanistan Kabul - A soldier from the US-led coalition troops was killed when attacked while on patrol in southern Afghanistan, a statement issued by the US military said on Thursday.

The statement, which was issued by the US military base at Bagram airfield, about 50 kilometres north of Kabul, did not disclose the nationality of the soldier, nor did it provide more details about the exact location of the incident.

Most of the soldiers serving under coalition banner are from the US.

Coalition forces kill more than a dozen Taliban in Afghanistan

Kabul - US-led coalition forces claimed Wednesday to have killed more than a dozen Taliban insurgents in volatile southern Afghanistan, while another four were detained by the combined forces elsewhere.

Afghan and coalition forces on Monday spotted a large number of heavily armed militants gathering in small groups and preparing to attack soldiers in Sangin district of the restive Helmand province, the US military said in a statement.

"The troops engaged the militants with small arms, machine guns, and close air support, killing more than a dozen militants," the statement said.

No Afghan or coalition soldiers were hurt in the incident, the military added.
