Samba encounter continues to haunt farmers along the Indo-Pak border

Samba (J-K), May 17: Samba encounter continues to haunts border farmers along the Indo-Pak border who clutch their hearts before entering their fields.

The farmers say that things had improved over the last few years but the recent encounter in Samba, about 45 km from Jammu, has once again put the fear into them.

"We were working in the fields when we heard firing shots. When this firing took place, all of us ran away," said Balbir Singh, a farmer.

They added that they had got used to peace in the region that was established after a peace process was initiated by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2004 but the recent incident has reinstalled fear in their minds.

London, Member of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation FrontMay 15: Claiming to be founder members of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), the erstwhile former members formed the Kashmir National Party in London on Thursday, and accused the JKLF leadership of having compromised the front’s ideology by making “private deals with secret agencies of India and Pakistan”.

Dr. Choudhry along with Zubair Ansari, Masoom Ansari, Ahesan Ansari, Nazam Bhatti and Aslam Mirza, recalled that they actively helped in establishment of the JKLF in 1977 in Birmingham.

Two militants killed in Doda

Two militants killed in DodaSrinagar, May 13 : Barely three days after the Samba encounter, security forces gunned down two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives, including a self-styled commander of the outfit, in a fierce gunbattle in Doda District.

Acting on a tip-off, police and security forces cordoned the area and launched a search operation in Gandoh area of Doda late on Tuesday night. A gun-battle ensued, in which the two militants were killed.

The deceased were identified as Farhat Hussain alias Mochi, area commander of LeT, and Pakistani militant Abu Raja.

Samba village defence committees intensify night patrolling

intensify night patrollingSamba (Jammu and Kashmir), May 13 : Days after an encounter between the Border Security Force and militants at Samba, Village Defence Committees (VCD) and the police have intensified night patrolling in border hamlets to prevent militants from hiding in the area.

"While three heavily armed militants were eliminated, seven others are still hiding in Samba and in adjoining forest belts and are waiting to strike at some places," sources said.

Four killed in militant attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, India  -  Four people including a photojournalist were killed in an attack by suspected militants in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police sources said.

A group of militants entered the house of Hoshiar Singh in Kali Mandi village in Samba sector, about 45 kilometres south of the state's winter capital Jammu, and killed Singh and his wife Sashibala, police said. The couple's daughter and Singh's mother-in-law were injured in the attack.

The villagers alerted security forces stationed nearby, who engaged the militants in a gun battle. A Jammu-based photojournalist Ashok Sodhi and one soldier died of gunshots wounds.

Four people killed as bus plunges into gorge in KashmirDoda (Jammu and Kashmir), May 10 : At least four died in IKashmir on Saturday when a bus fell into a deep gorge in Doda district.

The bus fell into the deep gorge of about 110 feet at village Baswal about 19 kilometres from Doda.

According to official sources at least 4 died in the incident and 5 passengers have been airlifited.

"According to information, there were 18 people in the bus. Four passengers have died and five have been air lifted," said Khurshed Ahmed Butt, Deputy Commissioner, Doda.
