Srinagar, India - Pakistani troops fired across the line of control that divides India- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Indian defence sources said Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Kupwara sector of the line of control, the de-facto border, sources in the Jammu and Kashmir state capital Srinagar said. More details were awaited, they added.

Fierce clashes between Indian and Pakistani troops along the border on Monday and Tuesday left one Indian soldier dead.

The fighting that lasted more than 16 hours stopped Tuesday, and a meeting was held between Indian and Pakistani troops.

Jammu, July 29 : Jammu continued to observe a shutdown for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, even as the authorities lifted curfew.

All shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and traffic was off the roads.

The capital had been reeling placed under curfew following violent protests over the revocation of forestland transfer order to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

Jammu, July 29 : As Indian and Pakistani troops traded fire in Kashmir for the second time in three days, Lieutenant General RK Karwal, General Officer in Commanding, 16 Corps, today said this was an attempt by Pakistan to disrupt the peace process between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters here, Lt. General Karwal accused the Pakistani Army of resorting to desperate unprovoked violations of the November 2003 ceasefire.

Srinagar, Kashmir - Fierce clashes between Indian and Pakistani troops along the volatile Kashmir border stopped Tuesday and the body of an Indian soldier killed in the violence was recovered, Indian officials said.

The firing began on late Monday afternoon after 12 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed region and shot dead an Indian soldier in the Nowgam sector.

Jammu, July 29: India has sought a flag meeting with Pakistan a day after skirmishes at the Line of Control dividing the two countries resulted in the reported deaths of one Indian soldier and four Pakistani soldiers.

Islamabad is yet to agree to participate in the flag meeting in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara-Nowgam Sector.

Monday’s skirmish is the sixth ceasefire violation that has taken place at the LoC in the past three weeks after Islamabad gave an assurance that it was committed to maintaining the ceasefire.

Jammu, July 28 : Despite curfew, people in Jammu continued to protest against the cancellation of land allotted to Amarnath shrine board in Kashmir on the fourth consecutive day.

Irate protesters on Monday pelted stones and burnt a police vehicle demanding the recall of the state Governor who assumed office recently and transfer of forestland to Amarnath shrine trust in the Muslim-majority part of Kashmir.

The agitation is being spearheaded by Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti and is supported by about 30 organisations in the region.
