Pak journo behind unearthing real face of politicians, judges gets death threats

PakistanIslamabad, Dec. 25 : Ansar Abbasi, the journalist whose scoops unearthed the real face of politicians, judges and several top officers in Pakistan, is facing death threats now.

Abbasi was warned through one of his close relatives that his life was under threat and he should be careful in his movements, as some people were out to harm him in the days to come as he had caused immense embarrassment to many in the regime by exposing their corruption and wrongdoings.

"I have already given some names to my family who should be directly held responsible in case any harm comes to me," the News quoted Abbasi, as saying.

Eight killed as apartment building collapses in PakistanIslamabad  - At least eight people were killed and 14 injured when an apartment building collapsed in the southern Pakistan province of Sindh early Thursday, officials said.

The five-storey building in Sukkur, 375 kilometres north-east of Sindh's capital Karachi, came down around 3 am local time, city mayor Nasir Hussain Shah said.

"Eight people have been confirmed dead and 14 more are injured. Some of the wounded are in critical condition," he said.

Peter Alex, the chief operating officer of the Hashoo group which owns the 289-room hotel, said "new concepts of security and safety" have been used in the extensive renovation work to ensure guests can check in without fear.

"It will be the Fort Knox of Pakistan," a foreign news agency quoted Alex, as saying.

PAF not to scale down high alert till threat perception goes down

Islamabad, Dec. 25: Even as the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) sustained its state of high alert, there were reports of the fighter jets continuing aerial surveillance over the Chashma nuclear power plant and other sensitive sites.

Pakistan had put its airbases on high alert over fears of Indian `surgical strikes' following the Mumbai terror attacks.

According to the Daily Times quoting a NNI source, the Lahore, Sargodha and Chaklala airbases were put on `high alert' on Monday to get ready for a war-like situation.

Some news reports also indicated that blackout exercises in Mianwali over the next few days.

According to the paper's sources, PAF is prepared to deal with any aggression from India.

Surgical strikes will be treated as war and will be repulsed: Pakistan

Islamabad, Dec. 25 : The Pakistan Senate has warned India that any `surgical strike' into its territory would be taken as an act of war and would be repulsed with "full force".

"Any violation of Pakistani territory would be considered as war and would be repulsed with full force," Leader of the House Raza Rabbani was quoted by the Daily Times, as saying.

He dismissed reports of Pakistan being asked by the US Chiefs of Staff, Chairman Michael Mullen, to not retaliate in case of an Indian strike.

"We were neither conveyed such a message by Mullen nor are we ready to accept such advice," Rabbani said.

He also rejected reports of disparity between the military and civilian leadership in Pakistan.

Pak Parliamentarians harassing female airline employees: MQM

Islamabad, Dec. 24 : Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmaker Khushbakhat Shujaat has said that she had received several harassment complaints from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees against Pakistani parliamentarians.

Khushbakhat was quoted by the Daily Times, as saying, "I have received several complaints from women staffers of PIA of harassment by officers and parliamentarians. The parliamentarians should consider their conduct since they represent thousands of voters who had sent them to parliament to safeguard their rights."
