My dear countrymen, brothers, sisters and my dear children.

Greetings to all of you on this happy occasion of our Independence Day.

This is a sacred day for every Indian.

Today we remember the sacrifice of those who under the leadership of

Mahatma Gandhi fought for our freedom from foreign rule.

Indian premier defends nuclear deal with US on Independence Day

India Prime Minister Manmohan SinghNew Delhi - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his Independence Day speech Friday, strongly defended his government's decision to pursue a civilian nuclear deal with the United States and talked of the need for political consensus to battle issues like terrorism, extremism and communalism.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort in New Delhi after unfurling the national flag, Singh dwelled on a range of issues, including relations with Pakistan.

Ten killed in truck accident on Jammu-Srinagar Highway

Ten killed in truck accident on Jammu-Srinagar HighwayJammu, Aug 14 : At least ten migrant labourers were killed when a truck skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today.

According to police, the ill-fated truck which was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu, skidded off the road while negotiating a curve at Anokhi fall near Battery Chashma in Ramban district early this morning.

The labourers are reported to have boarded the truck at Qazi gund and Lower Munda for their journey to Jammu and then onwards to Bihar.
