New Delhi - India will hold assembly elections in five states in November and December, the country's Election Commission announced on Tuesday, in what could prove to be a test for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's coalition.
The voting will be held in the national capital New Delhi as well as central states Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, northern Rajasthan and north-eastern Mizoram from November 14 to December 4, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami told reporters in New Delhi.

New Delhi, Oct 14 : President Pratibha Patil today called for an effective audit and monitoring of development schemes in the country for making them available to the intended beneficiaries.
Inaugurating the 24th conference of Accounts General here, Patil said that bench marking and assessment are the key elements of the role of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
"As a stake holder in the development, the CAG should align its audit priority with the current and strategic priorities of the government," she added.
New Tehri (Uttarakhand), Oct. 14 : Residents of New Tehri town, who were displaced from their villages in Tehri area to settle at a new habitat consequent to the Tehri Dam project, are today compelled to lead a dejected life.
They say the government had not fulfilled its promises and the promised New Tehri Town overlooking a lake is yet to come up.
A colossal sum of 500 crores of rupees had also been earmarked towards fulfilling the promises.
New Delhi - Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is recovering from gallstone surgery and was likely to leave a hospital in New Delhi this week, a senior aide said Tuesday.
"His Holiness Dalai Lama is recovering steadily and is doing fine," his spokesman Tenzin Takhla said.
"He is likely to be discharged towards the end of the week since doctors want to keep him under observation for a few more days as a precautionary measure," he said.
New Delhi - India's top private-sector airlines Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines announced a wide-ranging alliance that will help both carriers to battle declining growth and cut fuel costs, news reports said Tuesday.
"The two airlines will be able to rationalize their operations and derive the maximum synergies and thereby offer the best possible fares for the benefit of consumers," the IANS news agency quoted from a statement issued by the companies.
The alliance was firmed up late Monday night following a meeting between Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal and his Kingfisher Airlines counterpart Vijay Mallaya.
The companies said the alliance would entail huge costs savings but declined to give details.
