Opposition, police clash over over opposition arrestsManama  - Opposition group supporters clashed with police Wednesday on the third day of demonstrations against the arrest of three Bahraini Shiite opposition figures, as the protests spread to include six other groups who called for their release.

Unrest spread through the outskirts of the capital and many Shiite villages, leading to the arrest of another five people, bringing to 12 the total arrested since Monday, officials said.

The secretary general of the opposition Haq Movement for Liberty and Democracy, Hasan Mushaima; human rights committee head and Haq spokesman, AbdulJalil al-Singace; and Sheikh Mohammad Habib al-Miqdad were all charged with conspiring to overthrow the Bahraini government.

Bahraini authorities arrest three opposition figures

Manama, Bahrain - Bahraini authorities arrested three opposition figures on Monday, including the head of the Haq Movement, a senior member in it and a Shiite clergymen who is closely linked to the movement.

The early morning raids that led to the arrests came about after the three refused to adhere to a request by the public prosecutor to appear in front of investigators on Sunday.

Haq secretary general Hasan Mushaima, human rights committee head and official spokesman for the movement Abduljalil al-Singace and Sheikh Mohammad Habib al-Miqdad were all taken to unspecified locations following the raids on their homes.

Indian operator bought by Gulf telecom company With the aim to buy a $225m stake in an Indian mobile phone company, Bahrain's national telecommunications operator has joined hands with a Dubai-based private equity business.

It was informed by Batelco (Bahrain Telecommunications Co) that it would take a 49 per cent stake together with Dubai's Millennium Private Equity in S Tel, an Indian mobile operator licensed to operate in six Indian states with a total population of about 230m people.

Bahrain's Batelco picks up 49 per cent stake in India's S-TelNew Delhi - Bahrain Telecommunications Company Batelco has signed a deal to buy 49 per cent in Indian mobile telephone operator S-Tel for 225 million dollars, news reports said Monday.

Batelco partnered with Millennium Private Equity, a Dubai Financial Services firm, to purchase the shares in S-Tel, the Times of India daily reported.

S-tel director Santosh Robert told the newspaper the deal would enable his Chennai-based company to partner with an experienced operator for the new GSM rollout scheduled mid-2009.

Bahrainis in angry protest over GazaMuharraq, Bahrain  - US and Arab leaders came under heavy criticism from hundreds of protesters during a rally in Muharraq, north of the Bahraini capital Manama on Friday, amidst continuing violence in the Gaza Strip.

The protesters stabbed pictures of US President George W Bush, Israeli caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak, and Palestinian National Authority (PNA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas with knives, for their alleged role in supporting the offensive against the Gaza Strip.
