PM Manmohan Singh to begin two-day Assam visit today

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan SinghNew Delhi, Aug 25: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will begin his two-day visit to Assam from today.

Tight security arrangements have been made in the Jorhat, Nagaon, Kokrajhar and Guwahati areas where the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit.

Today, Dr. Singh is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the state’s fourth medical college in Jorhat, and also attend a power-point presentation programme on Majuli, the world''s largest river island.

Four suspected ULFA militants killed in Assam

Guwahati, Aug 13: Four suspected ULFA militants were shot dead by security forces in Bongaigaon and Nalbari Districts of Assam during two separate encounters early this morning.

Police recovered two pistols and a grenade from the slain militants in the first encounter that took place at Jelkajhar in Bongaigaon District.

While a pistol and a motor cycle were recovered from two other militants, who died on the spot in another encounter that took place at Satemari in Mukalmua area of Nalbari District at around 3: 00 a. m.

In the wake of general strike and call to boycott Independence Day by the banned ULFA and some other militant groups of the North-East from Wednesday mid-night, high alert has been imposed across the state.

Assam benefits from Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

Guwahati, Aug 7 : The Central Government''s premier education for all scheme -- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has received a wonderful response in Assam, especially in Chaygon of Kamrup District, where nearly 500 children with special needs have benefiting from it.

Providing basic elementary education to children between the age group of six to 14 years by 2010 is the objective of SSA.

"During the summer vacations, we bring those students who studying in schools to the centers according to the Gaon Panchayat. We give them academic support throughout the whole month," said Hemanta Sharma, a teacher.

Civil Society welcomes former ULFA cadres move to restore peace in AssamGuwahati, Aug 4 : It is not just the common people who are supporting the efforts of the former ULFA cadres to bring about peace in Assam. Also, lending their voice for the cause are intellectuals in state.

Recently, scholars and peace activists held a meeting here supporting the ULFA cadres who had returned to the mainstream to bring peace and normalcy to the state.

Assam Public Works, a non-governmental organization, which has been in the forefront advocating peace in Assam, came out in support of the cadres that left ULFA.

ULFA to use HUJI cadres for subversive activities in Assam

New Delhi, July 26: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has arrived at an agreement with the Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (HUJI) to operate jointly in Assam.

According to informed sources, the ULFA leadership, which has taken refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh, has taken this step to keep their local benefactors happy. Sources said it has agreed to provide logistical support to HUJI cadres for it to effectively target civilians and other "manned" installations in Assam.

The Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HUJI-B) was established in 1992, reportedly with assistance from Osama bin Laden's International Islamic Front (IIF).
