Musharraf, Gillani condemn attack on ex-law minister, order probe

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Makhdoom Yousuf Raza GillaniIslamabad, Apr. 9: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani have condemned the manhandling of veteran politician and former federal Law Minister Dr. Sher Afgan Khan Niazi in Lahore on Tuesday.

Musharraf called upon the authorities concerned to immediately conduct an inquiry into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. Prime Minister Gillani directed the Punjab Government to investigate the manhandling.

Plan for release of Pak scientist A Q Khan forwarded to PM Gillani

Islamabad, Apr. 9: Pakistani scientist A. Q. KhanA plan to facilitate the early release of detained Pakistani scientist A. Q. Khan has been forwarded to Prime Minister Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani.

According to sources close to the Prime Minister's Advisor on Interior and Narcotics Control, Rehman Malik, an extraordinary meeting was held here on Tuesday to discuss Dr. Khan's release, and it was decided that a summary of the proposed release plan and a review of the overall security situation, would be forwarded to the Prime Minister.

Pak to maintain minimum credible deterrence: Gillani

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza GillaniIslamabad, Apr. 8: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani has said that his coalition government is committed to maintaining minimum credible deterrence through conventional and strategic capabilities.

Talking to the Chairman, Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC), General Tariq Majeed, who called on him at Prime Minister's House, Gillani said that Pakistan had a major role to play for peace and stability in the region.

He praised the role of Pakistan's armed forces in rescue operations during natural disasters.

Gillani requests UK aid for developing Pakistan's tribal areas

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza GillaniIslamabad, Apr. 8; Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani has requested visiting British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to provide British assistance for the development of his country's tribal areas.

In a metting held at the Prime Minister's House on Monday, Gillani was quoted by the Daily Times as saying that his government is keen on improving the socio-economic conditions, reducing poverty and generating job opportunities for tribals living along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

Pak Parliament to resolve judicial crisis, says Gilani

Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Apr 7: Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the judicial crisis will be resolved by the Parliament.

During a meeting with a delegation of notables from different parts of the country here, Gilani said his government would take important decisions in cooperation with all political parties.

“To every wrong there is a remedy. There is no problem in the world, which does not have a solution. We will create bridges, not walls,” he said.

Kayani briefs Pak PM on prevailing situation in tribal areas and Army’s role therein

Islamabad, Apr 3: Pakistan Army Chief Gen Ashfaq KayaniPakistan Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani is learnt to have briefed Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, his cabinet ministers and other coalition leaders about the prevailing situation in the tribal areas and army’s role in combating terror in these areas.

According to sources, the military and civilian leaderships expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in the Tribal Areas. They stressed the need to work together to achieve consensus and devise a workable plan to tackle terrorism, while addressing the concerns of the international community.
