Protests against ban on opposition leader enter 3rd day in Pakistan

Pakistan Police LogoIslamabad - Police used tear gas and batons on the supporters of opposition leader Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan's capital Islamabad during third day of protest on Friday against a court ruling that banned him from elected office.

Hundreds of demonstrators blocked the main highway linking the capital with the adjoining city of Rawalpindi and pelted the vehicles with stones. Law enforcers fired rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd and chased them in the nearby streets.

Zardari betrayed us, says SharifLahore, Feb. 27 : Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that President Asif Ali Zardari betrayed him and his brother Shahbaz Khan by enforcing a false decision of disqualifying them from contesting elections.

Addressing a public rally for the first time in Sheikhupura, after the Supreme Court's verdict, Sharif said: "We were betrayed not by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), but by President Zardari."

Sharif's conviction in the Plane Hijacking Case and Helicopter Case were the primary reasons for his disqualification, The Nations reports.

Sharif was awarded life imprisonment after he was convicted for trying to hijack the aircraft of the then Army chief General Pervez Musharraf on October 12, 1999.

Talking to media persons after the apex court's verdict, he accused President Asif Ali Zardari of gambling over the issue.
