Sharif’s ‘provocative’ statements could spell disaster for Pakistan: Rehman
Lahore, Feb. 27 : Perturbed by Nawaz Sharif's verbal attack on President Asif Ali Zardari, and Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz's (PML-N) decision to stage nation-wide protests against Sharif's disqualification, Pakistan Information Minister Sherry Rehman has said that such a step will lead to further deteriorate-on the political scenario of the country.
Referring to former Prime Minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif's remarks on President Zardari and Supreme Court judges, Rehman said he (Sharif) should have maintained restraint while making provocative statements against the government and law enforcement authorities.
"Provoking the government and law enforcement officials by Sharif was akin to taking the country towards disaster and confrontation, and weakening state institutions," The Daily Times quoted Rehman, as saying.
She appealed to the PML-N leadership to rein in their emotions and avoid making personal comments, as Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani had hinted at a review of the Supreme Court's verdict.
Earlier, addressing a public rally for the first time in Sheikhupura after the Supreme Court's verdict, Sharif said: "We were betrayed not by the Pakistan People's Party
(PPP), but by President Zardari."
Sharif termed the judges announcing the verdict as `fake'.
"Shahbaz is still the legal and constitutional chief minister of Punjab as `fake' judges could not declare him ineligible," he said.
After the rally, the PML-N had decided to stage nationwide protest rallies and meetings against the apex court's verdict and imposition of Governor's rule in Punjab province. (ANI)
