Venezuela issues arrest warrant for opposition leader

Venezuela issues arrest warrant for opposition leaderCaracas  - A Venezuelan court Wednesday issued an international arrest warrant against opposition leader Manuel Rosales, who fled to Peru last week.

The court justified the warrant for Rosales, who is a fierce opponent of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, by arguing the 56-year-old former mayor of Maracaibo was avoiding a trial on corruption charges.

At the same time the authorities asked Interpol to assist the politician's arrest, who claimed political asylum in Peru.

Venezuelan opposition leader in hiding, faces embezzlement charges

Venezuelan opposition leader in hiding, faces embezzlement charges Caracas  - Venezuelan opposition leader Manuel Rosales has gone into hiding and will not turn himself in to the authorities on embezzlement charges, because he thinks he is being prosecuted for political reasons, his party said Tuesday.

Rosales planned to hold on to his position as mayor of the city of Maracaibo and would not leave the country, as he awaits guarantees of a fair trial, said Omar Barboza, a spokesman for Rosales' party Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT).
