Pakistan police foil terror plot planned for Benazir’s 1st death anniversary

Islamabad, Dec. 26: The Pakistan police has claimed that it has foiled an attempt by extremists to create mayhem on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto by recovering a huge amount of explosives from a terrorist hideout in Karal, in the outskirts of Islamabad.

"Over 650 kilograms of explosive material, including 520 detonating devices (12 packs of two different kinds), 357 bricks of the aemolite explosives, 20 bags of gun powder and 3 bags of sulphur powder, were recovered," the News quoted a source in the police department, as saying.

Three persons identified as Bacha Saeed Khan, Farid Khan and Musa Khan were hiding with the explosives when the police raided the hideout on information from intelligence agencies.

Pak issues Rs.10 coin to honour Benazir on her death anniversary

Former premier Benazir BhuttoIslamabad, Dec 19 : Pakistan will issue a new 10-rupee coin in honour of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to coincide with the first anniversary of her death in a suicide attack.

The State Bank of Pakistan will issue about 300,000 of the commemorative coins bearing Benazir's portrait and inscribed with the phrase "Daughter of the East - Honourable Benazir Bhutto" in Urdu, The News reported.

Bhutto was assassinated on 27th of December last year after addressing an election rally.

Mirza said that he had received alarming reports from many intelligence agencies about the possibility of a feared terror strike.

UN to confer its top human rights award on Benazir Bhutto

United Nations, Nov 26 : The United Nations has reportedly decided to confer its top human rights award on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

The award will be announced on December 10, when the UN Human Rights Day is observed across the world. The occasion also marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Daily Times quoted UN sources as saying that UN General Assembly president Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann would officially communicate the decision to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in the next few days about the conferment of the award.

Pakistani court indicts five over Bhutto murder attack

Islamabad - An anti-terrorism court on Saturday formally indicted five people in connection with the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, media reports said.

Bhutto was murdered in a gun-suicide attack in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, which is adjacent to the capital Islamabad, during an election rally on December 27 last year.

The authorities accused Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in the restive tribal district of South Waziristan of masterminding the slaying of the former head of the now ruling Pakistan People's Party.

The commander, who has links with al-Qaeda and leads a 5,000- strong militia, has denied the allegations.

Benazir’s death anniversary Dec 27 to be a public holiday in PakIslamabad, Nov 14 : The Pakistan Government is learnt to have decided to declare Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary on December 27 as a public holiday.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which leads the alliance government in Islamabad, decided this at a meeting of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting here last evening.

The CEC met at Prime Minister’s House with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the chair and finalised preparations for first death anniversary of the former premier, reported the Daily Times.
