Lahore, July 28 : PPP Co-chairman Asif Zardari or his sister Faryal Talpur may be the next presidential candidate after President Pervez Musharraf demits office, which, though, doesn’t seem to be happening in the near future.
Chairman of the PPP’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Muneer Ahmad Khan said that Musharraf should resign now as he no longer retained his powers.
Lahore, July 24 : PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly refused to reinstate the sacked chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, apparently due to the fear that the latter, if reinstated, might reopen for adjudication cases on the National Reconciliation Order and President Pervez Musharraf’s eligibility to contest for office.
During a meeting of leaders of the ruling coalition in Lahore last evening, Zardari repeatedly insisted on not reinstating Chaudhry, reported the Daily Times.
Hyderabad, July 23: The erstwhile ruling party in Pakistan, the PML-Q has alleged that the Yousuf Raza Gilani government was in fact a “government-in-exile” as all important decisions were being taken by PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. It accused the government of ignoring the parliament.
Addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ programme of the Hyderabad press club here on Tuesday, PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and secretary-general Mushahid Hussain Sayed said: “It is in fact a government in exile”.
Karachi, July 23: Unidentified gunmen killed the chief security officer of PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari last evening in Karachi. After being fired at by the assailants, he was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to bullet injuries.
According to officials, the assailants fired for two-three minutes and used an SMG rifle, .222 rifle and 9mm pistols.
Islamabad, July 22 : The Pakistan Muslim League-(Nawaz) PML-(N) has warned the Pakistan Peoples Party led Government to take concrete steps by August 15 on four critical issues, including restoration of the deposed judges and impeachment of Musharraf, or else it would withdraw its support to the Government.
The implementation of the Charter of Democracy and the review of the policy on the war against terrorism are two other issues that the PML-N is keen to take up with the Government.
Islamabad, July 22 : The ruling federal coalition in Pakistan has worked out a strategy to combat militancy and terrorism in tribal areas, said PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
Talking to a delegation of PPP MNAs from NWFP at the Zardari House last evening, he said that the crisis in FATA was “political, and not military”.
He asked the legislators to visit their constituencies and explain the government’s anti-terror strategy to party workers.
