Palm, Sprint announce new Treo 800w smart phone

If you are in a business and had been planning to buy a smart phone for yourself, then there’s good news for you.

Palm Treo 800w smart phone, which has been launched by Palm Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp recently, “is the most suited device for the business users.”

Though the new Treo look quite similar to the old Treo models, it is the first smart phone with the capability to access fast EV-DO Rev. This new smart phone would also give you the advantage of Wi-Fi and Global Positioning System capabilities. The customers, who will have to sign a two year contract, would also be getting discounts and rebates, and the price then would come down to $249.99.

Spokeswoman Karen Chan, who feels that their phone is not in competition with iPhone said, “It's not a direct iPhone competitor and is more for business users, while the iPhone is more suited for music and video and the consumer.”

The smartphone operates on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro operating system. Another function of Treo 800w includes Outlook e-mail and text messaging. You can also have the advantage Microsoft Word Editing and Excel documents.

The Treo 800w also features a 320-by320-pixel resolution touch screen; access to Sprit TV for news, weather and sports, and Sprite software for easy device backup. It also supports Bluetooth wireless and Wi-Fi and EV-DO Rev. its removable battery offers up to 4.5 hours of talk time. It weighs 5 ounces and is 2.28 by 4.41 by 0.73 in. in size.

Sprint requires a commitment to an unlimited data pricing plan, starting at $69.99 a month for unlimited data and 450 voice minutes.  

On the other hand, there is some good news for Verizon Wireless customers. They will now be able to get their hands on a Palm Centro which started on June 13. Verizon’s customers will get the Verizon version of entry-level smartphone at an affordable price of $99 which comes in cobalt blue color. The customers would have to sign a two-year contract for it.
