Pak security forces push Taliban out of Peshawar after two-week long operation

Peshawar, Nov 25: Security forces in NWFP claimed to have pushed the Taliban operatives out of Peshawar after two-week long operation in the area killing at least 25 suspected Taliban.

NWFP capital Peshawar is said to be a vital hub for military and relief efforts in the Tribal Areas and lies on a supply route for foreign troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Security forces backed by warplanes and artillery have swept through the region between Peshawar and the Tribal Areas, the Daily Times quoted security officials while addressing media persons last evening.

Provincial police chief Malik Naveed Khan said that two paramilitary soldiers and a policeman were also killed in the operation in Machni area. At least 40 suspected Taliban had been arrested, he added.

Zafrullah Khan, the commander of paramilitary Frontier Constabulary troops in the area, said his force and police have taken control of 22 of 25 targeted villages and would clear the others within a week. “The militants in these areas have been a big threat to the writ of the government. They have been a main source and origin of the crimes in Peshawar and other cities of the province,” he added.

He further said that those detained during the operation included foreigners, but provided no details. Four suicide jackets as well as weapons including guns, rockets and grenades were seized, he said. (ANI)
