Here’s why we are generous

Washington, November 7 : Ever wonder what drives us to donate money for a good cause or financially helping out a person in need? Well, researchers at Claremont Graduate University say the answer may lie in oxytoxin, a mammalian hormone involved in social recognition and bonding.

Neuroeconomist Paul J. Zak and his colleagues gave doses of oxytocin and a placebo to participants, who were then offered a blinded, one-time decision on how to split a sum of money with a stranger who could accept or reject the split.

Participants who were administered oxytocin offered 80 per cent more money than those given a placebo, they found.

According to Zak, the findings indicate that though humans are inherently altruistic, they are also generous when they feel empathy toward one another.

Nylon mesh to give traditional teabags the boot

London, Nov 7 : The traditional soggy paper teabags will soon be replaced by revolutionary nylon mesh versions.

Asda is replacing its conventional tea bags made from perforated tissue paper with the new nylon mesh bag for its upmarket range of teas.

Experts believe that the new bag will allow more flavour to seep into a cup of hot water.

One expert compared tea from the nylon bags as “top rate claret” against “cabbage water”.

Asda is selling its own label Extra Special range of tea in the new style see-through nylon bags.

Although the bags have been available at specialised tea shops, it is the first time they have gone on sale in mainstream stores.

At 1.97 pounds for 25, the nylon bags are around four times more expensive than the paper version.

Princess Diana would have survived had she been wearing seatbelt: Police expert

London, Nov 7 : Princess Diana would have been alive today if she had been wearing the seatbelt at the time of the fatal car crash ten years ago, a police expert has told the inquest into her death.

Senior accident investigator Anthony Read said that he could "almost guarantee" that Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed would have survived had they been strapped in and travelling at the speed limit when their Mercedes crashed in Paris's Alma tunnel on Aug 31, 1997.

PC Read, a senior collision investigator for the Metropolitan Police, estimated that Diana and Dodi's black Mercedes was travelling between 60 and 70mph, twice the speed limit, when it crashed into the tunnel wall killing the couple and their driver Henri Paul.

In-Car GPS Based Navigation Device Launched By MapmyIndia

MapmyIndia, a leading navigable map data supplier, has launched a Global Positioning System (GPS) based in-car navigation device, named as “MapmyIndia Navigator.”

MapmyIndia Navigator makes use of orbiters to decide a user’s location anywhere within the country. It directs users, turn by turn, along with visual map directions supported by voice prompts.

While driving, the device can either be mounted on the windscreen or dashboard, or carried in hand while sitting in the backseat of the car.

Rakesh Verma, managing director of CE Info Systems (promoters of MapmyIndia) said, “With GPS technology, and accurate MapmyIndia maps telling you exactly where to take your next turn, unnamed roads or unclear road signs are no longer an issue.”

Sharks pursue bloody victims using gel

Washington, Nov 7 : A new study by scientists has explained how sharks follow the bloody trail of a victim.

The process, known as electroreception, involves sharks, rays and skates using a gel-like substance on their heads to pick up electrical current signals from their water environments.

This explains why sharks pursue bloody victims, even when other 'easy target' prey is around and the gushing blood obscures the shark's vision and smell.

"The gel contains various proteins and salts, so it's similar to mucus, only with a jello-like consistency," said lead author R. Douglas Fields. "Basically, it's shark snot," he added.

The slimy substance plays a big role in hunting. It allows the fish to detect very faint electrical fields, which prey emit when they swim or bleed.
