Indian Government is planning a long term policy for the assured supply of Uranium for the nuclear power plants in the country. The government is looking for deals with various countries including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan for its current fuel requirements. It is noted that Indian nuclear power plants are facing acute shortage of nuclear fuel and working at their half capacity.

Joint exploration the possibility of mining and exploration of uranium is also on the cards. The Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on the Indo-US nuclear deal, Mr Shyam Saran said that country would sign an agreement with Mongolia for assured fuel supply. He also hoped low prices of nuclear fuel following the global financial crisis. This is ultimately good for Indian economy as it can get fuel at cheaper rates.

Mr Saran advocated the entry of private sector companies in the nuclear power generation program. Government can amend the Atomic Energy Act 1962 to pave a way for private sector in nuclear energy sector.

India has recently completed the nuclear deal with US. It can sign fuel supply contract up to 10,000 MWe with America. The country can also get dual-use nuclear technologies after the waiver from the 45-member nuclear supplier group (NSG).
