The quarter in one breath

Orient Electric delivered a 25.2% year-on-year jump in revenue to Rs 879.3 crore in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, a seasonally softer period for fans. The growth was not the product of a single hot category. Electrical consumer durables, which houses fans and appliances, and lighting and switchgear each expanded about 25%, and BOB Capital Markets says fans kept gaining share in both modern and traditional trade.

The result also cleared the brokerage's own expectations by a comfortable margin. Revenue beat its estimate of Rs 781.7 crore by 12%, EBITDA came in 17% ahead and adjusted profit 31% ahead.

Headwind versus tailwind: how a margin squeeze became an expansion

The defining tension of the quarter was a 251 basis-point fall in gross margin to 29.0%, as commodity inflation ran ahead of the company's calibrated price increases. What turned that into a net gain was below the gross line. Employee costs eased to 9.5% of sales and other expenses to 13.1%, helped by roughly Rs 13 crore of Sanchay savings. Operating expenses rose just 8% while gross profit grew 15%.

With depreciation and interest broadly flat, the extra EBITDA dropped almost entirely to the pre-tax line, which is why profit before tax rose 124%.

BLDC fans grew about 26%, premium products rose to about 41% of the fan mix and new launches supplied about 30% of fan revenue.

Margin also improved from the June quarter despite an 18% sequential revenue drop, which the brokerage ties to lower advertising after the summer season.

What changed in the forecasts

The brokerage raised revenue estimates for fiscal 2027 through 2029 by 6% to reflect the strong first-half run-rate, but trimmed margin assumptions because it expects commodity inflation and competitive intensity to keep gross margin under pressure. The net effect is a small cut for the current year and upgrades further out.

On the new numbers, earnings per share climb from Rs 5.0 in fiscal 2026 to Rs 8.1 in fiscal 2028 and Rs 9.5 in fiscal 2029, while return on equity improves from 14.6% to about 20%. Receivable days are forecast to ease from 68 to 60 by fiscal 2028, which helps operating cash flow rise to about Rs 307 crore that year.

September 2027 targetRs 240

The brokerage does not print the September 2028 EPS; about Rs 8.9 is TopNews's back-calculation from the target and multiple.

At the current price the stock trades at 34 times fiscal 2027 and 24.3 times fiscal 2028 estimated earnings, and at 13.1 times fiscal 2028 EV/EBITDA. BOBCAPS's BUY band requires an expected return above 15%, which the 22% upside clears.

What could slow the fan

  • Commodity inflation: the brokerage itself expects gross margin to stay under pressure, and price hikes have so far lagged costs.
  • Competitive intensity in fans and electricals could limit further pricing.
  • Mix dilution: faster growth in wires lowers the lighting and switchgear margin.
  • Seasonality: fan demand is weather-led, and the June quarter carries a disproportionate share of the year.

Editor's note

  • The report says fiscal 2027 EPS and profit were cut by 2%, but its revised-estimates table shows net profit moving from Rs 127.6 crore to Rs 123.4 crore, a cut of about 3%.
  • The text describes a margin trim of 10 to 59 basis points, while the same table shows reductions of 55, 25 and 10 basis points.
  • The balance sheet does not tie: fiscal 2026 total liabilities and equity are Rs 1,666.6 crore against total assets of Rs 1,658.2 crore, with a similar gap of about Rs 10 crore in fiscal 2027 estimates. TopNews has reported the brokerage's figures as printed.
