Marking a significant milestone in the evolution of electrified vehicles, the 2025 BMW M5 has emerged as the first-ever plug-in hybrid version of this iconic sports sedan. Equipped with a powerful 4.4-liter V-8 engine and an integrated electric motor under the hood, the 2025 BMW M5 PHEV boasts impressive specs and a corresponding premium price tag.

Produced and marketed under the BMW M sub-brand, the iconic BMW M5 has been one of the automaker’s high-performance variants. Industry experts considered it an iconic vehicle in the category of sports sedans. The first BMW M5 model was built in the year of 1985. Now, the latest variant received an electric motor too.

The powertrain of the new vehicle includes the aforementioned 4.4-liter V-8 engine and an electric motor that comes integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. For power, it relies on a 14.8-kilowatt-hour (kWh) high-voltage battery pack.

To be more specific, the BMW M5 PHEV, the seventh generation in the M5 series, tips the scale at 5,390 pounds. The powertrain boasts output of 717 horsepower (hp) and 738 pound-feet (lb.-ft.) of torque. These figures represent enhancements of 117 hp in power and 185 lb.-ft. in torque.

The new PHEV model is more powerful than ever before, but it is slower to 60 miles per hour than its predecessor. Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour takes just 3.4 seconds, two-tenths of a second slower than the predecessor. The decline in speeds is partly due to heavier weight of the 2025 BMW M5. The brand-new German PHEV is heavier by a whopping 1,000 pounds than the previous generation. Combustion engine enthusiasts might also not love the fact that the power output of the V-8-unit declines to 577 hp and 553 lb.-ft. of torque without support from the electric motor.

The battery pack of the vehicle is good for up to 25 miles of all-electric range, and it can be fully recharged using a Level-2 charger at a rate of up to 7.4-kW. One can also charge the battery while driving with the help of the eControl driving mode. The vehicle enters the Hybrid mode by default every time it gets started, giving access to the complete system output.

Undeniably, the 2025 BMW M5 represents the luxury car maker’s bold step into the hybrid era. However, despite its enhanced power and leading-edge technology, the increased weight of the vehicle poses a significant challenge for the company as it embarks on an exhilarating journey of integrating electric power into high-performance vehicles.
