Porsche and Audi, two luxury car brands owned by German automobile giant Volkswagen Group, have issued a voluntary recall of multiple all-electric vehicles (BEVs) available in the United States as they are concerned that their factories might have employed a sealant that doesn't meet robustness standards on the vehicles’ high-voltage batteries.

Insufficiently robust sealant on the EV batteries can potentially allow for the intrusion of liquids like water, thereby increasing the risk of a thermal event.

The voluntary recall issued by the aforementioned two luxury car brands encompasses all BEVs that were built in the 2023 model year, comprising a broad range of vehicles, including the Porsche Taycan, Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, Porsche Taycan 4S, Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, Porsche Taycan GTS, Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo, Porsche Taycan Turbo, Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, Audi e-tron GT, and the Audi RS e-tron GT.

In the massive voluntary recall, as many as 7,000 battery-powered vehicles are being recalled by the two luxury brands. To be more specific, Audi is recalling 1,899 EVs, while Porsche is recalling 4,777 electrified vehicles. Owners of the aforementioned vehicles are advised to schedule a service appointment with their nearby authorized dealers. The affected vehicles will undergo an in-depth examination that will be conducted to assess potential battery leakage. In case the examination reveals any issue, the entire battery pack will be replaced free of charge.

Notably, the Porsche brand took steps to improve battery sealing robustness, such as applying a Teroson sealant in the batteries for the Taycan vehicles. That effort aligned with the findings outlined in the Safety Recall Report that was published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Porsche took swift action to fix the issue out of an abundance of caution. The company started the sealant application in May this year, and since then, there have been no further complaints regarding liquid intrusion. The company claims that none of the few incidents that were reported by customers over the past few months led to fires or thermal events. The decision to undertake the proactive voluntary recall is driven by their unwavering commitment to safety, the official statement claimed.
