Paris - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sent a letter to his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, conveying the support of the French people and government following the quakes that have killed thousands of people in China.

"I would like to convey to you my most sincere feelings and express ... France's support of the Chinese people during this difficult time," Sarkozy wrote.

He also noted that Hu could count on his "personal support" and that he had confidence "in the capability of China to confront this calamity." (dpa)
