Musharraf vows to bring Benazir’s killer to justice

Islamabad, Jan 9: Ex-Premier Benazir Bhutto and President Pervez MusharrafPakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that his government was committed to finding the truth and bringing those culpable for the killing of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto to justice.

Musharraf told this to the Scotland Yard team that is assisting Pakistani investigators to probe into the assassination of Benazir. The five-member team of Scotland Yard has apprised Musharraf about the progress made into the investigation.

The team has reportedly told Musharraf that they would try to complete the investigation by the end of this month.

Assuring full co-operation to the Scotland Yard team, the President hoped that the forensic and technological expertise of the team would greatly contribute to the investigation, the Daily Times reported.

Reiterating that his administration would not interfere in the investigation, Musharraf said that Benazir’s killing was a conspiracy to destabilise the country.

Musharraf has expressed his gratitude to the UK Government for their quick response to the Pakistan Government’s request for assistance.

According to the British High Commission spokesman, Aidan Liddle, the meeting between Musharraf and the Scotland Yard team was ‘introductory’.

Refusing to divulge further details, Liddle said, "I won’t go into the details, but can tell you that it was a introductory meeting."

The Scotland Yard team had thanked the Musharraf regime for the assistance and co-operation provided to them in the probe, Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Robert Brinkley and a senior official of the commission, Keith Pearce, accompanied the team during the meeting. (ANI)
