Hendra Cases Reported in ChinchillaRecently, another case of Hendra virus was reported from Chinchilla. After the confirmation of the deadly virus, the authorities have warned the horse owners to take precautions to protect their horses from the deadly disease.

Queensland authorities confirmed that, on Friday, a horse in Chinchilla on southern Queensland's Western Downs died after contracting Hendra virus. It was the first case of the disease west of the Great Dividing Range. After the death of the horse, the authorities quarantined the property and mobilized teams to investigate who had contact with the sick animal.

Queensland Chief Biosecurity Officer, Dr. Jim Thompson, said that this year, cases of Hendra virus have been reported from Logan, Beaudesert, Mt Alford, Park Ridge, Kuranda, Hervey Bay, Boondall and Chinchilla. The numbers of cases are rising since the time the virus was first detected. Until now, 10 horses have died in eight locations across Queensland and 87 are being monitored. Nearly 60 people have been tested for the disease, since the first outbreak, last month.

Dr. Thompson also said, “The incident highlighted the need for horse owners across the state to be vigilant for signs consistent with Hendra virus infection”.
