Google to appeal German thumbnail copyright ruling

Google to appeal German thumbnail copyright ruling San Francisco - The internet giant Google is to appeal two German court decisions that found it violated copyright law by showing thumbnails of works by two artists in search results, PC World reported Tuesday.

The cases involved Google's Image Search feature in its search engine. The courts ruled that showing thumbnails of the images in its results list was a violation of copyright laws.

"We believe that services like Google Image Search are entirely legal and provide great value and critical information to Internet users," the company said in an e-mail according to PC World. "Today's (Tuesday's) decision is very bad for Internet users in Germany."

Google argued that the ruling is bad for websites that generate traffic from people using its Image Search as well as other services. (dpa)
