SADC announces new mechanism for delivering urgent aid to Zimbabwe

Southern African Development Community (SADC) LogoJohannesburg - Zimbabwe's neighbours in the Southern African Development Community on Wednesday announced a new mechanism for delivering urgent humanitarian aid to the crisis-hit southern African country.

South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, whose country currently chairs SADC, said financial and material aid would be channeled through a new structure called the Zimbabwe Humanitarian and Development Assistance Framework (ZHDAF).

‘Bum-flashing’ Santa cards pulled from UK stores

Santa CardsLondon, Dec 17 : Christmas cards with `bum-flashing' Santa were pulled out from the shops after they were deemed ''inappropriate''.

The cheeky cards created by a charity called Shelter features a cartoon of Santa peeling off to hang his clothes on the washing line.

The charity aimed to make 30,000 pounds with the sale of the cards but major distributor Cards for Good Causes, which supplies more than 350 shops, has refused to stock the "inappropriate" design.

Sweden urges Pakistan to crack down on Mumbai suspects

Sweden FlagIslamabad - Sweden joined Britain and the United States in urging Pakistan Wednesday to act against terror suspects behind the November 26 Mumbai attacks which killed more than 170 people.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said "effective and active" cooperative measures were needed to be taken by individual states to clamp down on terrorists operating across the borders.

"And this is of course particularly important to say after the Mumbai attack which obviously had its bases on Pakistani soil," Bildt said at a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

At 92, Kirk Douglas becomes MySpace''s oldest celebrity blogger!

Kirk DouglasLondon, Dec 17 : Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas, 92, has become the oldest celebrity blooger on social networking website MySpace.

Father of actor and producer Michael Douglas began blogging in March 2007 to promote his memoir, Let''s Face It, but he continued after seeing the interest generated by his posts.

The `Spartacus' star now has 4,414 friends, reports the Telegraph.

His blog contains his thoughts on politics and also features his sense of humour.

Bacteria’s tiny magnetic crystals are a compass, say researchers

Washington, Dec 17 : Scientists from Imperial College London and the University of Edinburgh have found that tiny crystals found inside bacteria provide a magnetic compass to help them navigate through sediment to find the best food.

They believe that the research may provide vital clues explain biomagnetism - a phenomenon in which some birds, insects and marine life navigate using the magnetic field that encompasses the Earth.

The researchers focused their study on magnetotactic bacteria, which contain chains of magnetic crystals, called magnetosomes. They exist all over the globe, living in lake and pond sediments and in ocean coastal regions.
