Sweden urges Pakistan to crack down on Mumbai suspects

Sweden FlagIslamabad - Sweden joined Britain and the United States in urging Pakistan Wednesday to act against terror suspects behind the November 26 Mumbai attacks which killed more than 170 people.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said "effective and active" cooperative measures were needed to be taken by individual states to clamp down on terrorists operating across the borders.

"And this is of course particularly important to say after the Mumbai attack which obviously had its bases on Pakistani soil," Bildt said at a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

The Swedish minister urged "less press conferences and more action" in the aftermath of the terror strikes in India's financial capital.

Qureshi reaffirmed Islamabad's commitment to assist Indian authorities in clamping down on suspects behind "the darkly act."

However, he said, "we are still awaiting concrete evidence from India."

New Delhi blames Pakistan-based elements of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group for plotting the Mumbai attacks, which have strained relations between the South Asian neighbours.

Pakistan has made several arrests and pledged its support for the Mumbai investigation, but India says it doubts Islamabad's sincerity. (dpa)
